The Best of Socorro
This 9-day, 8-night scuba diving liveaboard expedition, aboard Nautilus Explorer, takes you deep into the Revillagigedo Archipelago, one of the most extraordinary diving destinations on the planet. From the legendary cleaning stations of San Benedicto to the remote pinnacle of Roca Partida, Socorro is in a league entirely of its own.
Your Socorro Adventure With Pixel Expeditions
Our exclusive Pixel Expeditions charter of Nautilus Explorer is led by expedition leader Luke Coley, whose personal experience working aboard Socorro liveaboards means he knows these waters, these animals, and these dive sites as well as anyone in the world. This is not a generic group trip; it’s a carefully guided expedition to one of the ocean's true crown jewels.
Over five full days of diving across sites including El Canyon, the Boiler, Roca Partida, Cabo Pearce, Punta Tosca and Roca Oneal, you will have the chance to encounter giant oceanic manta rays that actively seek out divers, bottlenose dolphins that play and spiral around you underwater, and up to ten species of sharks.
But Socorro is as much about photography as it is diving. Between dives, Luke will run workshops, host image reviews, and offer one-on-one guidance to help you make the most of every encounter, whether you're chasing wide-angle manta shots or working the light on a passing silvertip. Nautilus Explorer features a dedicated camera station with charging points, rinse tanks, and ample storage to keep your gear safe and ready.
The trip departs from Cabo San Lucas, where Nautilus's own shore base, SeeCreatures, serves as your home away from home before you board. It's the perfect place to get your rental gear sorted, run a last-minute camera check, and attend the complimentary Backscatter photography briefing included on Day 1.
What a Diving Day Looks Like:
Nautilus Explorer uses a skiff-based "taxi" system, whisking you directly to the dive site and picking you up the moment you surface, so no waiting in the sun for everyone else. A typical day on the water looks like this:
Early morning → dive briefing → Dive 1 (often the most magical light of the day)
Breakfast → relaxation → briefing → Dive 2
Lunch → image review or workshop with Luke → briefing → Dive 3
Afternoon snack → relaxation → briefing → Dive 4
Dinner & downtime — photo sharing, presentations, and cocktail hour on deck
The team aims to offer four dives per day on all dive days, except on day 1, when there are three dives due to the mandatory Navy check. Dive numbers are subject to weather, sea conditions and the occasional crossing with other vessels at peak sites. It’s all part of the adventure.
Note that some dives at Socorro can be challenging, with strong currents and deep blue-water encounters. Divers should be comfortable and confident in open-water conditions.
Your Liveaboard in Socorro: Nautilus Explorer
Your home for this expedition, Nautilus Explorer, is one of the most respected and well-equipped dive vessels in the Mexican Pacific. The ship is ISM safety certified, the same standard applied to large cruise ships, and carries satellite communications, full-time data links, and internet at sea.
On board, you'll find comfortable en-suite cabins, a spacious dining saloon, sun decks, and hot tubs for unwinding between dives. The dive deck is set up with personal stations, and the skiff fleet runs continuously, so you spend more time in the water and less time waiting. Reef-safe sunscreen, towels, and bed linen are all provided. Safety equipment, including Nautilus LifeLines, DiveAlerts, and SMB sausages, is available to all guests.
The ship's bar stocks a great selection of signature drinks, single malts, craft beer, and wine. Nitrox is available for an additional charge. The team is ISM-trained, with crew certified in first aid, and several trained first responders on board at all times. A navy decompression chamber is located on Socorro Island, with civilian chambers in Cabo San Lucas.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Revillagigedo Archipelago, and Socorro in particular, is widely regarded as one of the top five dive destinations in the world. It is famous above all else for the giant oceanic manta rays, which have been interacting with divers here for decades and actively approach and circle underwater guests. Add bottlenose dolphins, multiple shark species, and seasonal humpback whales to that list, and you have a pelagic destination with few rivals anywhere on the planet.
-
The headline act is the giant oceanic manta ray, the friendliest in the world, according to those who know them best. Alongside them you can expect bottlenose dolphins, up to ten species of sharks (including whitetip reef, silvertip, Galapagos, and hammerheads), huge schools of fish, and seasonal appearances from humpback whales, pilot whales, tuna, and false killer whales. Sites vary from dramatic submerged pinnacles to cleaning stations buzzing with activity.
-
Absolutely, this itinerary is designed with photographers in mind. Expedition leader Luke Coley's deep familiarity with Socorro's dive sites means he knows exactly where and when to position you for the best encounters. Pixel workshops, image reviews, and one-on-one guidance are woven throughout the trip. Nautilus Explorer is a camera-friendly vessel with dedicated station space, charging points, and rinse tanks on deck.
-
All certified divers are welcome, but Socorro is not a beginner destination. Several dives involve strong currents, surge, and open-ocean conditions. You must be a trained and certified diver, and you should have solid buoyancy control and be comfortable in blue-water environments. If you want to brush up before the trip, SeeCreatures in Cabo San Lucas offers a full range of dive courses and two- or three-tank pre-trip boat dives.
