A Journey into History and the Wild

This one-day escape is designed for travellers who want to experience both the cultural depth of the Yucatán and its untamed natural beauty. In a single trip, you’ll walk through centuries of Mayan history at Cobá before venturing deep into the jungle at Punta Laguna, a protected reserve alive with wildlife.

Your day trip to Cobá & Punta Laguna with Pixel Expeditions

The morning begins at the ancient Maya city of Cobá, , once a powerful centre of trade and ceremony.

Unlike many archaeological sites, Cobá is spread widely across the jungle, with shaded trails that make every step feel like an adventure of discovery.

It’s an ideal spot for walking, with opportunities to spot birds and, on occasion, wild monkeys moving through the trees. We can explore the site on foot or rent bicycles to reach its most iconic structures, passing ancient ball courts and weathered stelae carved with Mayan glyphs along the way.

The highlight is the Nohoch Mul pyramid, the tallest in the region, which rewards those who climb it with sweeping views over the endless green forest. It is a striking reminder of how deeply this civilisation was tied to its natural surroundings.

After a mid-day break, we enjoy a traditional Mayan-style lunch, featuring local ingredients and flavours that reflect the region’s rich culinary heritage.

The afternoon is spent at Punta Laguna Nature Reserve,, one of our favourite parts of the day.

Guided by local experts, we walk beneath the forest canopy, listening for the distant calls of howler monkeys and spotting spider monkeys swinging overhead. The reserve is alive with colourful birds, butterflies, and other wildlife, bringing the jungle to life.

Beyond wildlife watching, Punta Laguna offers hands-on adventure: we canoe across the calm lagoon, take a refreshing swim in a cenote, and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of this protected reserve.

The combination of Cobá’s quiet grandeur and Punta Laguna’s lively wilderness creates a day trip that is both culturally rich and thrillingly wild: a perfect Yucatán adventure. It’s also a chance to see the Yucatán through two lenses—past and present—while creating memories that go far beyond a typical sightseeing tour. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a wildlife lover, or simply seeking variety in your travels, the Cobá and Punta Laguna day trip with Pixel Expeditions delivers a rich, unforgettable experience.
